The Bread Oven is a continuation of the work done by Rietveld alumni, Johannes Reisgl, Florian Lutz and Jakob Krinz. In 2019 they built the oven as part of their graduation project. With their approval, we, a group of five from the graphic design department, decided to reactive the oven and become its caretakers in May 2021.
Thanks to the Student Council we have been able to reactivate the oven and organise monthly gatherings happening on the school campus. In 2022 our focuss was on reactivating the Bread Oven and use it as a tool to bring people together. We have organised workshops as well as “open ovens”, where people are able to bring their own dough and learn how to bake it themselves in the oven. Our intention is to allow other students throughout the year to use the oven at their desire and for it to be an inclusive community.

*wavicle: an element of Emergent Strategy (adrienne maree brown): “the wavicle, or wave-particle duality, suggests that all objects exhibit both wave and particle properties. (...) This wave nature gives this measurement a curious property: the more certain we are about either speed or position, the more uncertain we become about the other. Uncertainty/doubt. Valuing both process and outcome.” We practice cold water swimming as a way to physically experience this concept which also echoes Walter D. Mignolo’s decolonial concepts of non-duality and contradiction: something that feels life threatening can also be life giving, as we feel several conflicting sensations at once while in the water. The practice of cold water swimming reminds us of our commitment to process and complexity, our ancestral, molecular belonging to water and (meta)physical connection to all that water touches.
**Walking Bodies, Becoming Wavicles consists of Effy Fu, Juliet David-Dufayard and Sophie Dandanell.
The project is kindly funded by Rietveld Student Council!
