Lecture by Charles Esche, director of Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; professor of contemporary art and curating at Central Saint Martins, London and co-director of Afterall Journal and
Books.
Judgement and quality are still at the heart of art and art education. Teachers assess the work of young artists, critics are required to formulate their opinion publicly and curators are expected to determine the quality and cultural value of a work for an exhibition or collection. In many western European art schools, such as the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, quality is used as the basis for assessing, and is associated with what is desirable and good in terms that are seen as both subjective and universal. In the light of the world in 2020, they might seem outdated and need to be adjusted or even abandoned.
The lecture will recount some of Esche’s and others’ experience with quality and judgement in the museum and education field over the past 20 years, will look at where the limitations of what is seen as sound judgement and good quality may lie and what kind of judgement and quality might be useful for art education today.
