We are happy to invite you to the launch of the Solidarity Platform, and ongoing project led by the non-EU support role and the Sandberg Student Circle from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie & Sandberg Institute. This platform is sourced from collaborative, shared documents initiated by non-EU students who identified the dire need for centralised information resources to help them navigate life in the Netherlands.
The Sandberg Student Circle is hosting a series of dinners where we invite recent alumni and current students to programme the evening. With a broad thematic approach concerned with sociality, commons/commoning, and collectivity, we are excited to bring in artists whose practices approach this constellation of themes from varied positions. Whether a listening party, workshop, lecture, guided walk, film screening, speculative presentation, game play-through, tasting menu, reading, a collection of all the above or something else entirely, the only criteria is that the evening involves, at some point, a dinner/the sharing of food.

For the first event in this series, we were inspired by some of the questions raised in last semester’s Student?Assembly? specifically concerning the lack of a commons, or communal spaces in which to gather, and the role of food in art education. We decided to bring these themes together, and create a series of events which create a communal space through the sharing of food that also allows for us to think of the role of food within the art context.
For our first event, alongside NON-EU Gerrit Rietveld Academie & Sandberg Instituut, we invited Disarming Design alum Anna Celda and Saja Amro to programme an evening responding to this theme. Both artists who work with taste in their artistic practices, they invite you for an evening of delicious food and thoughtful conversation around the commodification of food traditions in the art context. At the table we will share a space with each other and with two special guests: za’atar and pebrella. These herbs, each coming from the mountains at either side of the Mediterranean sea, will guide the evening through their taste.
As a duo, Anna and Saja work under the name of Common Ground. Though their individual practices vary wildly, they found a link in the kitchen, where they have been cooking together ever since they met. Different names for same ingredients, different processes lead to similar dishes. Since finding this common playground they have been working on providing food experiences based on the familiar tastes and values their cultures share. The act of breaking bread with one another and feeding the community around them is at the core of what they do.
We will close the workshop with music by DJ bebe and drinks by Lina Bravo Mora.
