AUX
Funded by the Editorial Board

aux) is an initiative funded by the Extra Intra Curricular Programme and run by students and alumni of Sandberg Institute and Rietveld Academie. The aim is to collectively question the contemporary domination of image over sound and to intervene with vision-dependent frames of making and knowing. The platform will offer a program that covers a spectrum of perspectives addressing sonic experiences and listening as everyday practices.

Listening Feedback: a session led by Julia Eckhardt

Call for Participants: aux) invites students and alumni from Sandberg and Rietveld for a second event guided by Julia Eckhardt. During this session, participants will have the opportunity to share their own audios, scores, or performances with each other, and have a close conversation and feedback from Julia. The idea is to start nurturing a space together where we can collaborate, create and think around sound matters, with an open and experimental approach. Participants will be asked to bring a sound material no more than 5 minutes long. We strongly encourage applicants with any kind of experience and from diverse backgrounds to participate.

Aux events during fall semester 2022:

October 21 Workshop Memory Work & Sonic Counter-Narratives by Bonnie Jones

An experimental workshop for generating counter-narratives by exploring personal, communal, and historical memories activated through collaborative, creative sonic practice. Bonnie Jones is a Korean-American improvising musician, poet, and performer working with electronic sound and text. She performs solo and in numerous collaborative music, film, and visual art projects.

November 1 Workshop loop-loop-loop by noiserr & Mattin

Time: 14:00 - 18:00 hs. Place: Project Space 2 FL124

In this workshop, we will try to actively understand how the logic of the loop works by generating a monstrous and perverted collective composition. Through collage techniques such as repetition, accumulation, mutation, layering, and contrast, we will dive into the making of loops with tape cassettes and digital recordings. Martina Raponi / noiserr is an Italian writer and artist based in Amsterdam, researching noise and complexity. In parallel, she co-founded Noiserr, an interdisciplinary research group focused on sound, and Ansible Institute, a transitory speculative fiction laboratory. She is an art theory tutor at the Willem de Kooning Academy and is currently working on her second book, "UNHEARD", in collaboration with the Institute of Network Cultures, Amsterdam. Mattin is an artist, musician, and theorist working conceptually with noise and improvisation. Through his practice and writing, he explores performative forms of estrangement as a way to deal with structural alienation. Mattin has exhibited and toured worldwide. Along with Anthony Iles, he edited the book Noise & Capitalism and is currently in the final stages of editing the volume Abolishing Capitalist Totality: What is To Be Done Under Real Subsumption? Urbanomic has just published this year (2022) his book Social Dissonance. Both are members of Noise Research Union

November 1 Book presentation: Social Dissonance by Mattin

Time: 19:00 hs. Place: Theory Stairs

In this newly published book, Mattin contextualizes his score Social Dissonance, which instructs the performer to make the audience their instrument. Reflecting upon contemporary conditions of alienation and instrumentality, the book explores the discrepancy between our individual narcissism and our social capacity.

November 2 Experimental music concert at Occii

Time: 20:00 hrs. Place: Occii Line-up: Mattin + noiserr, Jonathan Castro, Marielle Groven

November 15 Workshop d-tune-d by Constanza Castagnet

Time: 14:00 to 17:00 hs. Place: Auditorium 3rd floor BC Building

Because there is not one version or singular voice, not one static self on us, this workshop puts attention into using our voice as an instrument that provides new textures and sonorities to ourselves. We will delve into techniques to dislocate our recognized voices while working collectively as a group. Constanza Castagnet is an Argentinian vocalist and artist investigating the influence of sound on language. Through immersive sound installations, audiovisual pieces, text, and performances she explores how the voice can be an instrument of resistance over its function to transmit and communicate meaning. In parallel she co-founded aux)), a program addressing sound and listening as ways of knowing. Please note: no experience is necessary, the workshops are suitable for everyone interested and the aim is to create a space for creation in a collaborative, experimental, and safe environment.
