Interlude
Funded by the Editorial Board

interlude is an ever-changing formation of people gathering regularly to collectively un—learn and un—mute through listening and sounding practices. Inspired by Pauline Oliveros’ practice and philosophy, these experiences are invitations to explore emancipatory practices through the forces of sound and listening. Our project comes from a place of personal research, curiosity and genuine interest in the exploration of these practices. We are always seeking to approach them in a non-hierarchical way, learning from each other as well as all participants, creating support structures for others to feel held and heard.

If you have an idea for a listening session, share a track/text you’ve been working on, mix some music that is accumulating under your saved favourites, reach us with your propositions.

The unconscious expressed in uncensured movement

Let’s end the year with a last Interlude session organised by Chloé & Maren Weertman.
Activate the eyes, the ears, the hands, the skin, the space The inside to the outside and the outside to the inside. This interlude workshop is a movement session where the focus lays on getting back to our bodies and into our own intuitive, uncensured movement. Using tools from the Authentic Movement approach, real time composition and improvisation as well as writing and drawing, you will be guided through your body and imagination. Finding together a sensibility for the present space and time by a true listening to our bodies, to each other and to our senses.

LISTENING SESSION #18

Music for lighthouse-keeping, sensuous lovers, or the dining room of the athlete’s village at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964; a quick search on the music database Discogs indicates that as of November 2024, it contains 3,363 unique entries that have “music for …” in their title. These titles suggest that the music is preconditional; they are, for example, intended for a specific place, activity, or audience. During “Music for Biscuits and Other Preconditional Sounds,” sound artist Oscar van Leest will share some general reflections on the historical and contemporary contexts of listening and host a listening session featuring some of his favorite finds among the vast number of “Music for …” works that exist.

As kids, we want to reconnect with the primary needs of food, music and dance. In our early days we always wanted to grow up, and the more we grow up the more we feel this nostalgia and want to look back on our childhood.

Listening session #07 - A song is worth a million words

Last season interlude. That was, like, an entire sentence that we somehow built together with nouns and verbs and connective tissue. They were thinking how it was the connective tissue (yes the connective tissue) which it was all about. They were trying out shyly to offer ways of listening. But they could not say the day was over. The business, they thought, was not only unfinished but maybe not done enough. The ears still open. The people, yes all still here, byob, old friend. The thought of seeing each other again. The potentiality still glimmering around. And look, there might be even some new things awaiting you.

"My body is an interchange of time. It is traversed with signals, noises, messagesand parasites. It is not exceptional in this vast world.
This remains true of animals and plants, of air and crystals, of cells and atoms, of groups and constructed objects. Transformation, deformation of information."

NDNMK Solutions (Djatá Bart-Plange (1993, Meijel, NL(NL-GH)) is founder, CEO, and staff) is a Rotterdam-based, artist-run company that specialises in ideology management and whiteness-related consultancy. They provide sound-focussed memetic mind castles that serve as spaces of reflection, confusion, digression, and possibly ascension.
Their projects are often narrative-driven and transdisciplinary – digital ecologies/structures where sound, short story, performance, image and point&click mutate/pollinate into exportable, likable, sharable, immersive pathworkings related to politics of knowledge, seductions of privilege, rituals of innocence, (new age) marketing strategies, etc.
